Happy spring! The ice and snow are melting, the rivers are roaring with life and the birds are returning. It’s time to come out of winter hibernation and savor the inimitable delight of live music!
In this missive I give to you two great shows to check out, a few shows to plan for and an inspiring quote on the relationship of music and dreams from guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel.
This Friday, March 31 I’m very excited to return to Chandler’s at Yankee Candle (South Deerfield MA) for a very special night from 6-9 PM for Tex Mex! The menu is about half the price of usual entrees at Chandlers. I’m doing a very special ‘South of the Border’ show, focusing on music from Mexico all the way down to Brazil. Joining me will be Mowgli Giannitti on bass, fresh from his musical odyssey to Cuba.
Then next Friday, April 7 I’m performing bossa novas with Nancy Janoson and Jason Shwartz at The Lounge, Brattleboro, VT. The evening will feature bossa nova music from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil with a focus on the work of composer Antonio Carlos Jobim and guitarist Joao Gilberto. This is a very special trio to play in and I feel grateful to be able to share this gentle, heart-filling music with you. We play from 7-10 PM and it’s free!
Lastly, mark your calendars for two great spring shows. Both are at the Arts Block in Greenfield MA, part of Wayne Roberts’ Sunday Night Jazz Series there.
April 30 is Chet Baker Tribute with Ed Brainerd and Wayne Roberts. This is a rare area appearance of this music and not to be missed.
May 28 is the Bossa Nova show with Nancy Janoson and Jason Shwartz.
“I’ve received a lot of very important messages through dreams and learned a lot of very deep things about life through dreams. To me, the dream world and music are almost the same in the sense that you are connecting with the universe at large. Through both of these mediums we can gain access to realms that you can’t in the normal waking state of being. Music is a metaphor for dreams, which is a metaphor for music, which is a metaphor for life.” – Kurt Rosenwinkel (His new album Caipi is a masterpiece – highly recommended!)
